Culture is an important part of life in our Junior School, allowing every learner to discover their talents, express themselves and grow in confidence. From Drama, Dance and Music to Visual Arts, the Arts form part of the curriculum and are enriched through a variety of co-curricular opportunities.

Visual Arts
Art is a universal language, offering learners the ability to communicate and express themselves through drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, craft, photography, videography, filmmaking, and architecture. Across all phases of the school, learners are encouraged to explore Visual Arts as a means of developing creativity, imagination, and visual understanding, while building confidence and skill. Their work is proudly displayed throughout the school, reflecting both individuality and imagination.
Visual Arts continues to grow as a subject at St Nicholas, with learners demonstrating exceptional creativity both academically and through extracurricular involvement. Our Grade 12 Exhibition is a highlight of the academic year, showcasing impressive work that is well-received by examiners and the public alike. Learners also participate in KZN Museum exhibitions, with selected pieces recognised by the Tatham Art Gallery and displayed in this esteemed space.
The Art Club offers additional creative opportunities for learners not taking Visual Arts academically. It has become a vibrant and successful space where learners produce outstanding work, including magazine covers and school murals that reflect our values and Christian ethos.
Music & Performance
Music plays an integral role in school life. Our Junior and Senior Choirs, led by Mr Jumah, reflect a deep passion for singing and consistently deliver memorable performances at various school events and choir evenings.
A particular highlight is our annual Gospel Choir Evening, where schools come together for an inspiring celebration of song, worship, and fellowship. This special event reflects our faith and community spirit, beautifully captured in Psalm 145:3 – “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise.”
Our Marimba and Steel Drum Bands are widely recognised and have earned opportunities to perform at a range of prestigious events, including The Witness’s Birthday Celebration, multiple Comrades Marathons, Music Under the Stars at Liberty Midlands Mall, the International GMK Conference at UKZN’s Hexagon Theatre, the Official Opening of the KZN Legislature (2024), Symphony by the Water, live broadcasts on East Coast Radio, and various community events including church fetes, conferences, exhibitions, Hospice markets, and the annual Cansa Relay.
The school also participates in the Education Africa International Marimba and Steelpan Festival – the largest of its kind in the world – and our Steel Drum Band has performed at notable events such as the official opening of the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
Drama & Dance
Drama forms part of the English curriculum and is embraced with enthusiasm across the school. Learners are encouraged to develop confidence, communication skills, creativity, and self-expression through performance. Participation in drama allows learners to explore storytelling in dynamic ways while building teamwork and developing a stronger stage presence. Each year, learners are involved in major productions that showcase creativity, confidence, and collaboration, creating memorable experiences for both performers and audiences.
Dance is celebrated through our annual integrated school production, Funk, where learners work together to create powerful and expressive performances shared with the wider community at the Hexagon Theatre. This much-loved production provides an opportunity for learners from across the school to collaborate and create meaningful performances that combine movement, storytelling, music, and emotion. Through dance and performance, learners learn to express themselves with confidence while celebrating creativity and community.
Heritage & Cultural
A cornerstone of our cultural calendar is Heritage Day, where we celebrate the rich diversity of our school and country. The day brings together music, dance, sport, traditional food, and joyful participation from across the school community, reflecting unity, respect, and shared identity. These celebrations create opportunities for learners to embrace and appreciate different cultures while strengthening a sense of belonging and pride within the St Nicholas community.
We also celebrate the isiZulu language and heritage through our annual isiZulu Poetry Evening, which encourages learners to engage with writing, performance, and spoken word. This event promotes a love of poetry and language while providing a platform for learners to develop confidence in speaking and presenting. In addition, learners participate in the isiZulu Cultural Evening, hosted on a rotational basis between schools, further strengthening cultural appreciation, expression, and meaningful connection through shared experiences.
